Then do the following:
Go to the part that says "Think" and answer the questions related to the video! Post your answers as a comment below.
Also, write a short paragraph giving your personal opinion about how this video is also a representation of culture. Post your comment below.
Due date: February 13th
Think section: 1-Roman and Persian, 2-Into how many equal sections should it be divided, 3-A&B&C, 4-Pentagons don't neatly fill a surface, 5-Counting the petals or rays around central star, 6-Fourfold: four petal flower, Fivefold: sea star, Sixfold: Bee nest cells. 7-May be, because we as humans have a similar perception of the world, and geometric forms in nature are going to be similar in different places. As consequence, patterns are similar too. 8-I think craftsman is trying to create a beutiful and originial pattern, I suppouse his desing choices took into account the purpouse of the desing, for example: to decorate a temple, a house, a sidewalk, etc.
ResponderBorrarPersonal opinion:
I didn't know the way these desings were elaborated, for me was a very productive video because I always admire islamic art, but did not know this details. I like TedEd videos because they explain several topics in a way everyone can understand, I am a scientist as consequence art and desing are not my areas. I think is very interesting the technique and let us know how rich is islamic culture, which I think is very important, because a lot of people think everything related with islamic is bad. I think every country and culture had extremist groups and extremist people, but this video remember us, islamic cultures also contribute to world scientific and artistic knowledge, and we have to respect and admire positive contibutions of different cultures.

3. A & B & C.
4. Pentagons don't neatly fill a Surface.
5. Counting the 'petals' or rays around a central star.
6. Fourfold: a 4 Leaf Clover, Fivefold: many echinoderms, Sixfold: a snowflake.
7. Perhaps the natural environment of the zone can influence the possible patterns that people create. Another possible reason could be the grid, that can produce the different types of patterns, benefits the construction of some patterns and limits the construction of others.
8. I think the craftsman tries to innovate in the way of decorating different constructions so that they look more beautiful. His design choices may be inspired by his mood, his feelings and the purpose of the pattern, as in many other types of art.
Personal Opinion:
I have seen some buildings and books decorated with patterns like the ones of the video, but I did not know how those can be made. Some artists use this kind of patterns in their works, that makes me think that this kind of art still being actual. I really enjoyed this video, it is easy to understand and it show a side of the Islamic world that is usually omitted. This is really difficult to see, because many people think only bad things when something refers to Islamic culture. I am not attracted to art, but this type of art seems very interesting given the mathematical basis of its construction, and I really like the uses of mathematics in art.

I think that they wanted to archive the admiration of the people with very complex figures that are harmonious and satisfactory for the eyes. It’s the challenge of made something aesthetically beautiful and simple.

6. Flowers, Stars, Fish, Butterflies
7. I have seen that in various civilizations, there were advances in astronomy and things related with the nature. I think that the sky is a element that all the civilizations had in common. For that, I guess it could be due to the elements which were in the surroundings of each civilization.
8. I guess the first thing is the message that I am trying to transmit to others. Sometimes, it could be related with symmetry, beauty and perfection. For instance, I would try to choose something symmetry because I think it can be beautiful.
----
My opinion:
Most of the art represents an expression of the way of thinking of the people in a time lapse or in a place. This involves that customs and traditions can be drawn in a piece of art, music and so on.
In the case of the Greeks and Islamics, this art represents their preferences in the nature, the symmetry and their perspective of the world. They saw the world and the nature as a math description, making them understandable.

Fivefold: the center of a papaya
Sixfold: snowflake
7. Maybe because of the use of the grid, same patterns may be chosen, but even in nature we can find patterns in different countries or places.
8. Perhaps they are trying to create a pattern that transmit their way of see things, which is also original and enjoyable.
My opinion.
The culture may be a way to represent or register habits, rituals or behaviors. For example, the Islamic designs represent how the Roman and Persians influenced this culture, also to how they see the world, and what their perspectives are. This video help us to understand how they do that designs and some Islamic habits.

Fivefold: center of an apple
Sixfold: a
7. Maybe because this patterns are create inspired by natural shapes, like in the natural or the sky.
8. I think the craftsman was inspired by the location or environmental around the place where the art was made, and the type of building or the type of people that life around.
I have seen some books or decorations with these design, but I have never known where all these design come from. Is interesting to know that all those design come from a basic form: the circle. That represent that with a little of imagination and inspiration we can do powerful and beautiful things. Around the world exist a lot of culture that has their own techniques of decoration or building that are unknown to others.

7. I think that not exit a pattern or only way to make geometry patterns. The artist makes his own creation because he or she is inspired and maybe they will be equal in different places.
8. he was trying to achieve that you can play with your mind and you can make all that you want.
I think they may have determined their design choices according to the mood of the person

ResponderBorrarHomework 2
ResponderBorrar1. Which two cultures influenced the early development of Islamic geometric design?
Roman and Persian
2. Every Islamic geometric pattern begins with a circle. What is the first major decision you take after drawing the first circle?
Into how many equal sections should it be divided
3. Which of the following statements are true? A grid _____.
Helps to determine the scale of the composition
BKeeps the pattern accurate
CFacilitates the invention of new patterns
4. Why are fivefold patterns more difficult to tessellate than fourfold or sixfold patterns?
Pentagons don't neatly fill a surface
5. What is the most straightforward way to determine into which category a pattern falls?
Counting the 'petals' or rays around a central star
6. Geometry is everywhere in the natural world. Can you find of examples of fourfold, fivefold and sixfold geometry in nature?
Sunflower, sea star and the internal structure of some fruits
7. Some patterns appear across the Islamic world and across the centuries. It is often not clear how the same patterns could be made in different places, centuries apart and thousands of kilometers apart. What possible explanations can you think of that might explain this?
As we as seen the patterns exists on Nature, and that is precisely the source of imagination for humans. It´s not difficult to think why the patterns appeared in different times and even thousands of kilometers apart.
8. The way Islamic geometric patterns are embellished/made more beautiful differs per region. In Mughal India, they used marble and colored stone. In Mamluk, Cairo, they made many patterns in wood. In Ilkhanid, Iran, they used different ceramic glazes. In Marinid, Morocco, they used small ceramic tiles. Craftsmen made deliberate choices about how they presented their geometric patterns, often taking into consideration the distance of the observer. Take note of the differences and similarities of some Islamic geometric patterns and imagine yourself in the shoes of the craftsman who made them. What was he trying to achieve? What do you think may have determined his design choices?
They were trying to achieve perfection through a visual representation of geometric harmony.
Nature, mathematics, astronomy...
1- Roman and Persian - 2. Into how many equal sections should it be divided - 3. A & B & C - 4. Pentagons don't neatly fill a Surface - 5. Counting the 'petals' or rays around a central star - 6. Flowers ,Starfish , Snow Flake - 7. I think, the reason is because they focus their work and investigation in the nature, they use to watch very carefully that kind of details, wich they adapted to their culture. - 8. The crasftman probably tried to show his art in the way he likes more, but at the same time, he tried to unite us with nature through symbols and his art, also taking advantage to decorate the place.

6. About fourfold: simple forms geometrics, fivehold you have to mix shapes to make something repeteable. In sixfold: you can use multiple shapes with faces, fishes.
7. I think, could be possible that people know or to develop abilities like how to design o pint a geometric complex. So, the generations are changing and all the knowledges and costumes are transmitted across the centuries.
8. I think craftsmen want to achieve or to please their gad, because is the gad who gives the abilities to make may patterns, so that based in their costumes and religitions.
Its standing out that the designs and special effects, and the capacity to build many same and nice designs, that's gripping.
